Black History Remembered

December 4, 2008

Black History MuseumTouring the Alexandria Black History Museum is a great way to spend a few hours in Alexandria. Dedicated to the history and accomplishments of African Americans in Alexandria, this museum is filled with paintings, photographs, books and other memorabilia documenting the story of the African American experience in Virginia since the 1700s.

The building itself is historical in that it was home to the Robert Robinson Library which was the segregated Black public library in Alexandria. The highlights among the museum collections include a series of sculptures by renowned artist, Jerome Meadows. There are a variety of wood carvings from the west coast of Africa, and you can see a 100 year-old pump organ that was once played at a local Baptist Church. You’ll even find a collection of African American stamps donated by the post office.
